Fixed Odds Trade – Spot Gold Price No Touch Bet

My fixed odds trading suggestion for today is in one of my favourite commodity markets, gold. While gold prices failed to penetrate the $980.00 level, we are probably not going to see them fall back into the 750 dollar per ounce level, as we saw during the summer months last year. In fact with uncertainty in the equities market intensifying, and risk appetite amongst investors falling, gold bears will be hard pressed to get the price of gold anywhere close to the $910 per ounce level in the short term. With that in mind, a 10 day ‘no touch’ bet on the price of spot gold, with a trigger at $900.00, could pay a potential 18% ROI if correct.

Fixed Odds Trade – Breakout Trade Dow Jones 15th June 2009

As highlighted in this morning’s post, last week was unusually calm, and a return to volatility is certainly possible later this week, and my suggested fixed odds trade for today is therefore a breakout trade predicting that the Dow Jones Industrial Average will hit 8500 or 9000 in the next 9 days which could return 20% if correct.

Fixed Odds Trade – No Touch Bet EUR/JPY 9th June 2009

The FTSE 100 index is currently indicating a slightly stronger open, as traders wait for the release of the DCLG UK House Prices data later this morning. There is some indication, as with several other fundamental news items, that the data is showing some improvement in the overall economy, but there is a long way to go!

Crude oil is up in early trading once again, as most Asian stocks rose after economist Paul Krugman said the U.S. recession may end this year, coupled with increasing demand oil, which also received a further boost as the US dollar declined, raising the appeal of commodities as a hedge against a weaker U.S. currency. Oil prices are likely to continue to test the 70 dollar level today, and possibly push on towards the $75 per barrel outlined by the OPEC members at their last meeting in Austria.

My suggestion for today on the fixed odds market is once again in the currency markets, and this time the euro vs yen pair, with a 7 day no touch bet on the EUR/JPY with a trigger at 140.00 which pays a 24% return if correct. Fixed Odds Trade Of The Day – Barrier Bet Dow 30 1st June 2009

The resilience of the rally in equities is all the more impressive considering the onslaught of negative economic data, and the massive GM bankruptcy running in the background. However, lest we get ahead of ourselves, there is still a long way to go for both the stock markets and the global economy before we can start to see the green shoots of any economic recovery, so beloved of the politicians at the moment!!

My suggest fixed odds trade for today therefore is a barrier range trade biased to the upside which I feel is the best way to play the equity markets at present. A barrier range fixed odds trade predicting that the Dow Jones (wall Street) won’t touch 7750 or 9250 in the next 60 days could return 110% if correct. Fixed Odds – Financial Markets Weekly Review 1st June 2009

Stock markets have had a relatively quiet few weeks for fixed odds trading, though the trend has remained biased to the upside. It has been credit and currency markets that have seen most of the action of the last couple of weeks with the US dollar being punished, and with the dollar index falling over 1.5% on Friday alone. This is partly down to concerns over the US budget deficit, and fears that the Fed is trying to monetise their rising debt mountain. Another explanation for the slump is a returning appetite for risk from global investors. During the height of the crisis, the dollar, and US treasury bonds were seen as a safe haven. Now with confidence easing back into the system, this flight to safety appears to be rapidly unwinding. Bonds were massacred last week, while the US dollar fell heavily against a basket of currencies including Sterling and the Euro.

Funds are flowing out of ‘safe’ assets into riskier, more inflation resistant assets, such as equities, gold and oil. Oil and gold in particular are in demand with oil touching $66.46 on Friday, and gold surging to $980. It is interesting to note that oil is now 45% below its peak in 2007, while the Dow Jones is down 60%. Oil fell further, but has recovered quicker.

UK banking shares managed a positive week, with Barclays once again leading the pack. There was a midweek wobble on the release of the FSA’s stress test methodology, which many have been interpreted as not being stressful enough. The market appears to have priced in more adverse test conditions, causing many traders to reasses their assumptions about the UK banking sector’s ability to weather a sustained economic downturn.

The coming week starts with a bank holiday across most of Europe. UK manufacturing PMI and US ISM manufacturing data are the standout economic releases for the day. Tuesday brings more US housing data with the release of pending home sales. Wednesday brings ADP non farm employment changed and Fed chairman Bernanke testifying. Thursday is extremely busy with rate statements due from the ECB and MPC and Bank of Canada. Friday closes an already busy week with Non Farm payroll numbers. In the US, it seems to be the case that jobless claims data is setting a new record every week. Continuing claims are showing no signs of retreating, and it is no coincidence that mortgage delinquencies reached a record high of 9.12%. There was some positive news with new home sales rising month on month, but the down trend remains very much in place for the time being.

Fixed Odds Trading – Fixed Odds Bet GBP/USD 29th May 2009

The FTSE 100 is currently indicating a flat opening, as traders await the release of the UK Nationwide House Price data. Some analysts are expecting worse then expected results, which may well have a negative effect on the FTSE 100 index at the open. Later today US will release its GDP numbers, and if the numbers are worse than expected could trigger a sell off in equities around the world.

Crude oil is currently trading near its six-month high after rising yesterday as OPEC decided to leave production quotas unchanged and a government report showed that U.S. inventories declined, but all of this weeks gain might be wiped out should the US GDP numbers show no hint of a recovery. Gold and silver continue to perform well in the commodities sector along with copper as demand from China starts to build.

While the British Pound stalled at the 1.6000 level with a shooting star candle, I believe that any retrace may well be short lived, and with that in mind a 31 day bull play on the dollars to pounds pair with a trigger at 1.5300 pays 12% ROI. Fixed Odds Trade – S & P 500 Bear Bet 26th May 2009

The UK’s leading share index, the FTSE 100, is currently indicating a weak opening, as the sell off that started in Asia continues. With almost no economic news coming out of UK, share traders are looking at other countries for guidance. This morning the data which is likely to set the tone for the day will be the GDP numbers for Germany (Europes biggest economy), and my feeling is that FTSE 100 is likely to start the day in the red.

Crude oil is trading at 61 dollars per barrel after concerns that OPEC will maintain production targets at current levels even as the global recession curbs fuel demand, and is generally thought that OPEC is unlikely to change anything at its May 28 meeting, which combined with record high inventories will have a negative impact on crude oil prices.

At the end of this week the US will announce its GDP numbers, and from my research the numbers are not going to be good. Bull Bet – GBP/USD Dollars To Pounds 22nd May 2009

The FTSE 100 currently indicates a stronger open, as equity traders prepare for the release of UK’s GDP numbers. Traders and investors are hoping that the numbers will show signs that the recession is slowing down, and a recovery is around the corner, the much trailed green shoots so beloved by the politicians!!. The FTSE opening price will greatly depend on the GDP number with the forecast being -1.9%. This morning’s GDP data is the revised number,which is the second of three data sets for this important piece of fundamental news on the economic calendar.There are in fact three versions of GDP released a month apart – namely the Preliminary, the Revised ( which is this mornings), and the Final. The Preliminary release is the earliest and thus tends to have the most impact across the markets.

Daily crude oil prices were unfazed by the sell off that equities experienced yesterday. Currently oil is trading at 61.50 per barrel, with analysts now suggesting that 65 dollar a barrel is possible with in the next few weeks, and this would seem to be confirmed by the daily oil chart.

The UK Pound has been on a run lately breaking above the 1.5500 level which was a major resistance level, and my suggested fixed odds trade for this morning is therefore an 11 day bull play on the GBP/USD with 1.5500 as the trigger. No Touch Fixed Odds Trade – USD/CAD 20th May 2009

The FTSE currently indicates a slightly weaker open, as traders are waiting for the release of the minutes from the last Bank of England meeting. Analysts are hoping that the minutes will indicate what the government is doing to ease the credit freeze. The FTSE is likely to start the day in the red. Oil is trading near $60 a barrel after a U.S. industry report showed crude inventories declined and a fire at a Texas refinery curbed production. Oil prices are likely to stay in a tight range until the release of the US DOE inventory report.

Fixed Odds Trading – Market Report 18th May 2009

The fixed odds financial markets were placed firmly on the back foot last week, as the previous week’s rally was strongly reversed. Dark clouds are gathering over the green shoots. A slew of poor economic data has caused investors to take money off the table, with the selling pressure building momentum. Investors have taken more time to make sense of the rally from the lows of March. Summing up the current mood, ECB president Trichet recently stated that growth is at the ‘inflection point’ in the economic cycle. The OECD put out a more positive message by starting that Britain, France and Italy were showing tentative signs of the recession slowing. This cagey language is a step down from the ‘green shoots’ talk that was spreading last week, and market momentum seems to have dropped a gear accordingly. Oil has been rising in tandem with global economic confidence, but it appears to have overshot a little, hitting $60 at one stage last week while equity markets continue to flounder. Inflation concerns are starting to grow again as oil continues to strengthen, especially with crude oil prices having such a big impact on the US trade deficit.

The flow of data from the US continued to be dour. US housing foreclosure activity increased by more than 32% year on year in April. US retail sales dropped by 0.4% month on month, and 11% year on year. Markets were also spooked by comments from David Walker, suggesting that the US could be in danger of losing its precious AAA debt rating. US industrial production is now 16% below its peak. Capacity utilisation also reached a new record low since records began in 1967. On a slightly more positive note, according to the Empire State Manufacturing Survey, conditions got only slightly worse in May. Less bad is the new good it seems. The financial implications of the GM bankruptcy seem to be unclear at the moment, as this political hot potato rumbles on. The dark news flow wasn’t restricted to the US, with UK PPI recording its smallest increase since the 1960s, and the BoE inflation report suggesting that the UK recovery will be slower than previously expected. The cautious report sent the pound tumbling against most world currencies.

This week starts in earnest with UK CPI and US building permit numbers on Tuesday. Wednesday sees the release of the minutes from the last MPC and FOMC meetings. Thursday is a bank holiday in France and Germany. UK GDP figures are released on Friday and FOMC chairman Bernanke closes the week with a speech on Friday. Markets just about weathered the dreadful US unemployment claims data. Continued jobless claims in the US now stands at a staggering 6.56 million which is easily an all time record. However, the four week average of unemployment claims has fallen from its peak, causing some to speculate that the US is nearing the end of the recession. In previous recessions, the turning point has been marked by the four week average of the unemployment claims peaking. While it is too soon to say that this is the case here, there is at least light at the end of the tunnel and for us as fixed odds traders, plenty of opportunities for trading the financial markets using fixed odds!
