AUD/USD - Daily Candle Chart One Touch 11th February 2010

For fixed odds trading this morning the currency to watch is the Aussie Dollar, which is already up by 1.5% in early trading,  with the Aussie vs Yen also up by a similar percentage at 1.30%. This dramatic move has also helped to drag the New Zealand dollar to the upside, with the NZD/USD currency trading up by 0.75%. The reason for the move higher was the release overnight of the Australian employment data, which came in well ahead of forecast at 52.7, and exceeding  analysts forecasts of 15.1 by some margin. This news coupled with the recent move by the Australian Government to remove its guarantee of banking deposits. has been seen by the markets as a signal that the worst of the recession is now over, and the these two news items have combined to produce the surge higher seen in the currency markets today. Whilst the AUD/USD remain well below the highs of 2009, this is nevertheless and encouraging signal for AUD/USD bulls, and my fixed odds trading tip for today is to bet that this pair will achieve a price of 0.94 in the next 55 days. Today sees two items of news planned for release later, the first of which is Swiss retail sales due out shortly, which is then followed by the Housing Starts data in Canada, which unlike Europe, has been improving steadily following the long deep recession of the last two years, no doubt helped to some extent by the Winter Olympics which are due to start in Vancouver on the 12th February.

For fixed odds trading today, the forex pair to watch is the dollar Swiss and should the numbers better than expected then this could be good news for the Swiss currency, and an opportunity to enter the market with a no touch bet this morning over the next few hours. This afternoon look for fixed odds trading opportunities in the usd to cad pair, where the forecast is for an improvement once again from 175,000 last time to 180, 000 this time, and if the number is better than expected then again this will be good news for the Canadian dollar.

USD vs CAD - Daily Candle Chart US Dollar Canadian Dollar

The FTSE, DAX and CAC are down by around a quarter of a percent at the open. Asian markets were weak overnight, with losses ultimately following the evening sell off in US markets. Wall Street slumped to a six week low as traders dismiss talk of green shoots. UK PM Gordon Brown has warned of a second wave in the recession and there are rumours of second massive stimulus package being required to kick start the US economy. Oil is a good barometer of economic sentiment and judging by the 5th consecutive session of declines in crude prices, the omens aren’t good. Today we have the UK Halifax House Price index at 08.00 GMT followed by Eurozone GDP at 09.00.

My Fixed Odds Trade

Currency markets are quiet so far today as traders adjust to the renewed strength in the dollar seen over the last few days. The yen pairs have seen the most action so far today with AUD/JPY the biggest mover after better than expected Australian home loans data. The biggest movement seen on a non yen pair is the USD/CAD (US Dollar/Canadian dollar) which is often influenced by the price of oil. So far the pair has moved less than the equivalent move in the price of crude and If oil keeps up the pace of declines, this relative inaction might not last. This makes the USD/CAD today’s pair in play. A break out trade can be a good way to trade a range bound market as the range cannot last forever. One way to play this would be a break out trade on the USD/CAD over 3 days with the lower level set as 1.1500 and the higher level set as 1.1850.

Pound vs Yen – Daily Candle Chart For Currency Rates 1st June 2009

The FTSE 100 is currently indicating a flat open, as traders are waiting for the release of the UK Purchasing index for Manufacturing. Analysts are expecting an improvement over last months reading of 45.4, which could signal that there is optimism for a recovery in the manufacturing sector,despite yesterdays truly appalling GDP data in the UK.

The price of oil tumbled from an eight month high as U.S. consumer confidence declined in June, indicating lower fuel demand. The UK economy shrank by the greatest amount since 1958, after the final GDP reading showed worsening conditions. Oil prices are likely to continue to trade around the 70 dollar level, as traders are worried that the economy has not yet hit rock bottom.

The GBP/JPY failed to clear the 160.00 price level last time, however yesterday’s  inside candle suggests another run at the resistance area. Euro vs Dollar - Fixed Odds Trade 30th June 2009

The FTSE 100 index is currently indicating a flat open, as traders wait to see the final reading of the UK GDP numbers before deciding where to take the market. Analysts are expecting a figure of -2.1% , which would suggest thatde the recession is getting longer and deeper, and the FTSE 100 opening number, greatly depends on this mornings data.

Crude oil is trading at an 8-month high and is set for its biggest quarterly gain since 1990, as the U.S. dollar declined and militant attacks in Nigeria raised concern that supplies may be disrupted. Royal Dutch Shell Plc shut an oil field after an attack by Nigerian rebels, disrupting supply from Africa’s largest producer. Oil prices seem to have found a range, however oil disruptions will push the price higher.

My suggestion for today’s fixed odds bet is on the euro vs dollar. It seems that the Euro has been one of the biggest beneficiaries from the weakness in the USD, and a 3 day one touch on the euro to dollar with a 1.4250 trigger pays 129% ROI if correct. Remember that all the fundamental news is loaded into a shortened week with the 4th of July holiday in the US on Friday, so Thursday is the big day for Non farm Payroll, which could provide the trigger for this fixed odds trade. On the currency markets, the pound managed to finish the week flat against the dollar, but lost some ground against the euro. The euro also managed to make good gains against the dollar and held firm against the Japanese Yen. Gold recovered well from a mid week dip and closed slightly up on the week. Crude oil fared slightly worse, finishing the week just below $70 for the first time in three weeks.

This week’s action starts with the UK’s Nationwide House Price Index on Tuesday and with uncertainty still surrounding the recovery, or otherwise, in the housing market could cause volatility to sterling.  UK current account figures are due at 12.30 GMT and these too could have a similar impact.  The Halifax House Price Index is also scheduled for release next week, although so far the exact date has not been determined.

Australian retails sales are due for release on Wednesday and are expected to show a slight improvement on the previous month. The Australian economy continues to show resilience compared with other western economies.  At around midday we get the warm up to US Non Farm Payrolls with ADP employment data. It could be a volatile period with ISM manufacturing and pending home sales following  just a couple of hours later.

On Wednesday we also have some central bank action from both the BOE (Bank of England) and ECB.  Various MPC members are due to speak and the BOE credit conditions survey is due for release.    These are followed by the ECB press conference.   Meanwhile the US Non Farm payroll is brought forward one day to Thursday owing to a national holiday on Friday.   With so much data we  could see significant volatility in the EUR/ USD on what will, in effect, be the last trading day of the week.  With US markets closed on Friday, Forex markets should be quieter than usual.

Gold Price Chart - Daily Gold Prices 26th June 2009

We’re looking at a very strong opening from the FTSE, CAC and DAX this morning, as a rollover from yesterday evening’s sustained rally on US markets creates a pull through effect into Europe. Last night’s buying surge appears to have been a delayed reaction to Ben Bernanke’s testimony, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both closing strongly, and moving in to positive territory for the week.

European stocks should start on the front foot from the start, and there’s a strong chance that the major indices will finish the week in the black. Monday’s sell off is increasingly looking like a fakeout as previous trends are re-engaged. Appetite for risk and confidence are both returning as evidenced by a slightly weaker dollar this morning and oil prices pushing over $70 a barrel once again.

The forex markets have been relatively quiet so far this morning, with the US dollar down against the euro as traders look for riskier assets elsewhere, but this morning’s biggest mover is spot gold which is up around 0.65%. After backing and filling for a good while, it could be the precious metal’s chance to finally make some serious moves. One Touch and Break out trades could be the best way to play this over the next four days.

Euro vs Dollar - Daily Currency Chart (EUR/USD) 24th June 2009

The FTSE 100 index is currently indicating a higher open for fixed odds trading this morning, as traders are looking to move back into the equity market after the recent sell off. With the Nikkei 225 closing in the positive territory, investors are looking for value buys after comments by the World Bank spooked investors into a general sell off, and with no economic news this morning, the FTSE 100 is likely to start the day in the green as the broader financial markets await the FOMC statement later today in the US.

The price of crude is currently trading below $69 a barrel after an industry report showed an increase in U.S. gasoline inventories, raising concern that the global recession will sap fuel demand. Economic data in Japan overnight showed that exports from the world’s third largest oil consumer accelerated its decline in May, casting further doubt for a recovery in the near term.

Crude oil continues to trades near the $71 a barrel mark, and is set to mark its first declining week since early May. Oil prices have enjoyed support at the 70$ mark on expectations that an economic recovery will increase fuel consumption, and the sideways consolidation on the daily oil chart, suggests that this may provide the springboard to a move higher, to retest the $75 per barrel price level. The moving averages seem to be providing support and it would not be a great surprise to see this level reached in next weeks trading. Gold and silver traded sideways again yesterday, but both found support from their respective 40 day moving averages, always a positive signal when looking for technical trading signals. This would seem to suggest that these two commodities have found a base from which to build once again, but much will depend on the performance of the equity markets in the next few days, coupled with any return to strength for the US dollar.

Crude oil rose is trading around the 71 dollars per barrel level after militants claimed they destroyed a Royal Dutch Shell Plc pipeline in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, and as U.S. stockpiles declined, following the release of the EIA oil inventory stats yesterday. Oil prices are likely to continue to trade in a 5 dollar range for the rest of the week as the price of oil continues to consolidate before pushing higher, possibly as far as $75 per barrel next week, and in line with the figure outlined at the recent OPEC meeting. Other commodities, such as gold and silver have suffered some sharp declines this week, but are now trying to consolidate, and we may see a reversal of these losses as we move into next week.
