It’s been a good start to the day for the FTSE, CAC and DAX. This is largely down to a final hour surge in US markets last night with the European indices playing catch up this morning. Speculators rushed to take a position in Google last night ahead of their earnings announcement after JP Morgan beat expectations. Although markets are higher this morning, there are reasons to be cautious. Firstly, Google’s results were mixed with their share price plunging in after hours trading, and secondly the overnight bomb blasts in Jakarta have also forced investors on the defensive, putting the brakes on gains in financial markets this morning.

Fixed Odds Bet Today

As we saw in early trading yesterday, investors have reverted to risk averse mode, moving to safer assets overnight. The yen and dollar are in demand with the pound and Aussie dollar particularly out of favour with investors. There is little by the way of economic announcements this morning apart from US building permits at 12.30. The pound vs dollar has been one of the morning’s biggest movers and if US building permits come in better than expected, the pound’s slump could continue. One way to play this might be a one touch trade with the trigger level set at around 1.6100. A One touch trade over three days could return 259% over this period.

Pounds To Dollars Daily Candle Chart - GBP/USD 14th July 2009

It’s all a bit flat this morning, but this certainly won’t last. Yesterday, stock markets rallied on rumours that the profits from investment bank Goldman Sachs will tip $2 billion. This was the first positive catalyst that investors have had in a few days and they grabbed it with both hands. This morning we’re seeing the calm before the storm with Goldman’s actual results being released just before the opening of US markets. It could therefore be a volatile open for the Dow Jones depending on how well Goldman’s actual results are received. It’s not just Goldman’s results that could excite today, we have a raft of important economic announcements to come this morning. From 08.30 GMT we have UK CPI and RPI which will give trades an idea of the current inflation expectations for the UK economy. This could have a knock effect on the pound especially with MPC member Posen speaking at the same time. At 09.00 we have German and European ZEW economic sentiment which could impact the euro. Then at 12.30 we get US retails sales and PPI. It’s quiet now, but this really could be the calm before the storm today.

With Goldman Sachs releasing their results from midday, and a raft of important economic announcements, dollar pairs could be in play today with the pound vs dollar potentially the most active of all the pairs. It’s relatively calm until 08.30 GMT so it may be a good time to profit from the coming volatility before it happens. A one day breakout trade could be a good way to play this as the GBP/USD can go in either direction and the trade still winning as long as it goes somewhere fast as it could do today.

USD vs CAD - Daily Candle Chart US Dollar Canadian Dollar

The FTSE, DAX and CAC are down by around a quarter of a percent at the open. Asian markets were weak overnight, with losses ultimately following the evening sell off in US markets. Wall Street slumped to a six week low as traders dismiss talk of green shoots. UK PM Gordon Brown has warned of a second wave in the recession and there are rumours of second massive stimulus package being required to kick start the US economy. Oil is a good barometer of economic sentiment and judging by the 5th consecutive session of declines in crude prices, the omens aren’t good. Today we have the UK Halifax House Price index at 08.00 GMT followed by Eurozone GDP at 09.00.

My Fixed Odds Trade

Currency markets are quiet so far today as traders adjust to the renewed strength in the dollar seen over the last few days. The yen pairs have seen the most action so far today with AUD/JPY the biggest mover after better than expected Australian home loans data. The biggest movement seen on a non yen pair is the USD/CAD (US Dollar/Canadian dollar) which is often influenced by the price of oil. So far the pair has moved less than the equivalent move in the price of crude and If oil keeps up the pace of declines, this relative inaction might not last. This makes the USD/CAD today’s pair in play. A break out trade can be a good way to trade a range bound market as the range cannot last forever. One way to play this would be a break out trade on the USD/CAD over 3 days with the lower level set as 1.1500 and the higher level set as 1.1850.

Aussie Dollar Daily Chart - AUD/USD 6th July 2009

The effects of last weeks US employment numbers seem to linger, as all the equity markets are indicating a weak start to the week, and with no economic news out of the UK this morning, the FTSE 100 index is likely to open in the red this morning, as risk aversion returns to the markets. Crude oil fell to the lowest in five weeks on a stronger dollar and speculation that the ongoing recession in the worlds largest economy will curb the demand for oil. An attack on Nigerian oil fields has helped to provide some support for oil prices, however that might not hold for long should the bigger traders decide to sell  their inventories during the trading session, and it seems likely that oil prices may test the 63 dollars per barrel level this week. Longer term the outlook remains bullish but in the short to medium term we may see a reversal followed by sideways consolidation following the recent bull rally.

My trading suggestion for today in the fixed odds market, is on the aussie dollar currency pair, and with the AUD/USD currently stuck in a 4 cent range between 0.7800 and 0.8200 for the last month, a 7 day barrier range bet on the AUD/USD with triggers at 0.7725 and 0.8250 which pays 38% ROI seems like a good value bet. Pounds To Dollars Daily Candle Chart - 2nd July 2009

The FTSE 100 is currently indicating a weak open, as traders are worried that yesterdays bad US ADP numbers will be matched by worse then expected US employment date today. Analysts pay close attention to the job numbers to figure out the health of the economy, and traders are betting that the numbers will disappoint, and fall below the forecast as with the ADP numbers yesterday. In addition we have the ECB interest rate decision and statement today, which is released at the same time as the NFP data in the US, so a double whammy this afternoon, which may seal the fate for the US dollar for the next few weeks as the FED and ECB battle it out in the currency markets, as to who wants the stronger or weaker currency and why.

Crude oil is currently trading around the 69 dollars per barrel mark after falling in the past two days, as demand for refined products in the U.S. remained weak and any hints of a recovery were thrown out the window after really weak employment data from US.

Pound vs Yen – Daily Candle Chart For Currency Rates 1st June 2009

The FTSE 100 is currently indicating a flat open, as traders are waiting for the release of the UK Purchasing index for Manufacturing. Analysts are expecting an improvement over last months reading of 45.4, which could signal that there is optimism for a recovery in the manufacturing sector,despite yesterdays truly appalling GDP data in the UK.

The price of oil tumbled from an eight month high as U.S. consumer confidence declined in June, indicating lower fuel demand. The UK economy shrank by the greatest amount since 1958, after the final GDP reading showed worsening conditions. Oil prices are likely to continue to trade around the 70 dollar level, as traders are worried that the economy has not yet hit rock bottom.

The GBP/JPY failed to clear the 160.00 price level last time, however yesterday’s  inside candle suggests another run at the resistance area. Crude oil continues to trades near the $71 a barrel mark, and is set to mark its first declining week since early May. Oil prices have enjoyed support at the 70$ mark on expectations that an economic recovery will increase fuel consumption, and the sideways consolidation on the daily oil chart, suggests that this may provide the springboard to a move higher, to retest the $75 per barrel price level. The moving averages seem to be providing support and it would not be a great surprise to see this level reached in next weeks trading. Gold and silver traded sideways again yesterday, but both found support from their respective 40 day moving averages, always a positive signal when looking for technical trading signals. This would seem to suggest that these two commodities have found a base from which to build once again, but much will depend on the performance of the equity markets in the next few days, coupled with any return to strength for the US dollar.

There appears to be a standoff between those who believe higher oil prices and the prospect of higher interest rates are indicators of the worse being over. On the other hand, the pessimists believe that growth will continue to falter, and higher oil prices will bring the stagflation monster out of hiding.

The optimists scored a point last week, with US jobs data topping analysts’ estimates and retails sales rising for the first time in three months. However, it will take a meaningful breakout of the recent trading range before it can be said that either the bulls or the bears have got the upper hand.

Oil finished the week up strongly, breaking through and holding above the $70 level. The pound recovered more of the ground lost last week against the dollar, and has continued to make multi month highs against the Euro and Japanese Yen. Sterling has been one of the strongest currencies over the last month, but there is still a long way to go if the pound is to reach pre Northern rock levels from almost two years ago.

This week promises to be busier, with more top tier economic announcements due. On Tuesday, the central bank of Australia releases the minutes from their last meeting, and the Bank of Japan release their monetary policy statement. Later that day we have UK CPI, German ZEW sentiment and US building permits. Wednesday brings UK claimant count change, and the release of the minutes from the last MPC meeting. Governor King is also scheduled to speak at some point in the day. After Midday we have US CPI data and Bernanke speaking. Thursday brings UK retail sales and US unemployment claims, so a busy week in prospect for fixed odds trading, with plenty of opportunities across all the markets.

Euro vs Yen - Daily Chart EUR/JPY Currency Rates 10th June 2009

The FTSE 100  is currently indicating a flat open, as traders are waiting for the release of  the UK industrial production numbers before deciding where the FTSE index will go next. While analysts are expecting an improvement from the latest numbers, there is concern that they could be are overly optimistic, and the pattern for this morning’s share trading and the FTSE 100 opening price will greatly depend on the economic data later in the trading session.

Crude oil prices continue in bullish tone, with the price of oil currently trading above the 70 dollars per barrel level after an industry group reported U.S. crude stockpiles dropped and the dollar declined, bolstering the appeal of energy as an alternative investment. In the short term we can expect to see oil reach the $75 per barrel outlined by OPEC ministers at their recent meeting, and thereafter we may see a period of consolidation at this level in the medium term.

It seems as though the euro has hit a wall against the Japanese yen, with prices currently stalled in the 137.75 region  and from a technical perspective we have a shooting star coupled with a ‘hanging man’ bearish signal on the daily chart. Whilst all three moving averages are currently pointing higher, there are signs of weakness in the current rally and therefore my suggested fixed odds trade today is a 7 day no touch bet on the EUR/JPY with the trigger at 142.5o. If correct this offers a 12% return on investment.
